Why this exists

I have walked up to more than five and a half thousand strangers and started a conversation. Not as a technique and not for a living — I did it because the first sentence used to be impossible for me, and the only thing that ever moved it was doing it again.

What I learned is that nothing about it is intellectual. You can read every book on the subject and still stand in a shop with your heart going and say nothing, because the gap is not knowledge. It is that your voice has never done this before and it will not leave your mouth.

The only fix is repetition, and repetition is expensive: every attempt costs you a bit of nerve, happens in front of somebody real, and cannot be retried. Cold Open is an attempt to make that part cheap. You get a person who looks at you, hears you, answers while you are still talking, and is entirely free to be busy, bored or finished with you.

It is deliberately not a course. There are no openers, no lines and nothing about handling objections or talking somebody round, because those are the parts that made me worse rather than better. There is no leaderboard, no streak and no score you can grind. There is a stranger, five minutes, and whatever you actually say.

Everyone here is generated: a generated face, a synthetic voice and a written character. Nobody real is used, nobody is impersonated, and nothing you say is recorded or stored. If any of that ever stops being true, it will say so on this page first.
